WE FOR WOMEN is a women’s empowerment project in Burundi. A Financial Education Training held on Nov 18, 2022

As the Tabitha Community in Action envisions a transformed and resilient world, it has been working to empower women from vulnerable communities in Burundi. With the support of Global Youth Mobilization, on November 18, 2022, at our center, we were glad to organize a financial education training for 20 women working in VSLAs. They named their VSLA Nyunganira, and we were amazed by the progress already made since the beginning of the #WEFORWOMENPROJECT.

When asked about the benefits of being a VSLA member and direct beneficiary of the We for Women Project, women first mentioned: (i) The ability to pay for their children’s school fees and health insurance, (ii)the ability to invest in their IGAs largely came after providing for their families; (iii) the ability to be trained in sewing and financial education; and lastly, the ability to develop leadership skills.

A session of Saving during the Financial Education Training

Many women previously relied on financial support from their husbands to cover these expenses. They are now pleased that they can contribute or even cover the costs themselves. Some of them have already received VSLA loans to fund their income-generating activities, while others are receiving sewing training.

The Global Shapers Community Bujumbura Hub Curators attended the activity. They encouraged the 20 women to always save before consumption, to have an income-generating activity, and to learn new skills. Some of them are being trained in sewing and tailoring, and others are being trained in financial education. Through our actions, we promote income-generating activities to ensure equal rights and opportunities for all.

We expect to see resilient women who can meet their families’ basic needs, educate their children, and actively participate as actors in Burundi’s long-term development. And we are so appreciative of the support of Global Youth Mobilization. Together, we can achieve more. The Founder and CEO, Ndihokubwayo Jimmy, stated.

We are thrilled to be a part of this project. Due to the COVID-19 crisis and financial instability in our country, it was not easy until this project found us. Through an election, I was chosen to lead the group alongside four other women. Not only are we getting empowered financially, but our leadership skills are being enhanced, and now we see a bright future in front of us. Thank you again, donor, for this project. Said Annociate NAHIMANA, NYUNGANIRA VSLA Leader.

The training was successful and the activities keep going on. We keep you posted. Thank you for reading us and your support.
